SUMMARY:Summer Member Social & Community Workday
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nFor this year’s Summer Member Social\, we are gathering as a community to help a local school community. Washington Montessori\, an SLPS school located in the Fountain Park neighborhood\, was in the direct path of the EF3 tornado that tore through St. Louis neighborhoods on May 16\, 2025. The 200+ students were incredibly lucky to make it through the tornado unharmed\, but the school itself was badly damaged. Students and staff were displaced and only recently returned to the building in January of this year. \nWhile the district was able to renovate the school itself\, the school’s beloved garden has not been repaired. This essential outdoor classroom was a beautiful space with over 20 raised beds that grew fresh produce for the cafeteria and for families to take home and cook with their children. It hosted a flower garden for the pollinators. It had a sensory garden designed for their 78 preschoolers and over 15% special education population. \nOur objectives include: \n\n(1) removing & repairing broken beds and nails to make the space safe for children(2) restoring the mulch and soil that was completely wiped out by the winds(3) jumpstarting the renovations so that the local partners in the area can get back to doing what they do best – supporting their local school \nWe hope you can join us to spruce up Washington Montessori’s garden. DESCRIPTION:Join us on for a Tornado Relief Fundraiser at the Built / Coltrane Showroom in partnership with ULI St. Louis\, Design Surfaces and the Landmarks Association. We encourage everyone to come out and help raise funds to support 4theVille Emergency Hub in their critical tornado relief and response efforts. This will take the place of our monthly EP Happy Hour @ Session Taco on Thursday June 5th\, which has been cancelled. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, June 3 @ 4:00pm – 6:00pm \nWHERE: Coltrane & Built Showroom\, 2818 Locust Street \nPARKING: There is a lot across the street from the Built + Coltrane Showroom designated for visitor parking (sign will be on fence). Street parking is also available on Locust Street. One special feature is a large hickory tree that had to be removed from the site\, which was wood kiln-dried and repurposed as the lobby’s fireplace mantle. SUMMARY:The Evolution of LEED: Local Stakeholders & Project Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on the Evolution of LEED in partnership with USGBC. As LEED v5 progresses into its second public comment period\, USGBC staff\, local experts and volunteers will outline the next version of the rating system and discuss ways to engage. We’re excited to feature an overview and update on the LEED v5 O+M Beta Project at Kansas City Missouri’s City Hall. \nView a list of attendees.  \nSPEAKERS: \n\nSheri Brezinka\, USGBC Regional Director\, West North Central\nSheri oversees USGBC market transformation and development activities across the Midwest. An experienced senior leader in sustainability with a focus on the built environment\, strategic partnerships\, stakeholder engagement and organizational management\, Sheri is a resource to policy makers at the state and local level. She raises awareness about USGBC’s work through public speaking and serving on stakeholder groups. Prior to this role\, Sheri was appointed Executive Director of the USGBC Minnesota Chapter in February 2009\, working with the Board of Directors to strengthen and expand the organization. Before joining USGBC as staff\, Sheri was actively involved as a volunteer leader when she helped form USGBC Minnesota in 2002. With a background in the construction industry\, Sheri brings over 25 years of experience in the building industry. In her previous positions as Director of Marketing for Weis Builders\, Inc. and Adolfson & Peterson Construction\, she developed and led the general contractor’s sustainability programs. \n\nKacey Eis\, Sustainable Buildings Coordinator\, Office of Environmental Quality\, City of Kansas City\, Missouri\nKacey Eis is the Sustainable Buildings Coordinator for the City of Kansas City\, Missouri where she is responsible for implementing the Homes & Buildings Strategies outlined in the City’s Climate Protection & Resiliency Plan. Kacey has worked in the private\, non-profit\, and public sectors and is a LEED Green Associate. She holds a Bachelor’s in Community Health from the University of Kansas and a Master’s in Environmental Sustainability and Certificate in Science\, Technology and Public Policy from the University of Michigan. Kacey is leading a LEED v5 Beta project to certify Kansas City\, Missouri’s City Hall building. \n\n\nEd Soltero\, Assistant Vice Chancellor and University Architect\, Facilities Planning & Management\, Washington University\nEd Soltero\, Ph.D.\, FAIA is the Assistant Vice-Chancellor\, FPM\, and University Architect at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he leads the planning and design team and manages initiatives for long-term campus planning\, collaborates with the university’s capital projects team and provides leadership as the university works to reach infrastructure-related sustainability goals. In his previous position at Arizona State University (ASU)\, he led a comprehensive annual capital project portfolio of $1.5B with a strong focus on sustainability\, which garnered local\, regional and national design and sustainability awards. His varied career includes design leadership\, management of multi-functional teams in both private sector firms and institutions\, business development\, project management\, strategic leadership and customer service. Ed has developed an exceptional background in architecture and construction project management during the course of his 39 years of professional experience. Fellowship was conferred upon him by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 for his contributions to the practice of architecture. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional since October 2008. \n\nSara Greenwood\, The Greenwood Consulting Group\nSara Greenwood is a LEED Fellow and sustainability consultant with over 16 years of experience. Her expertise and insight into emerging green building practices and technologies provide a unique perspective for clients pursuing green building certification and sustainable business initiatives. She helps teams manage the certification process to achieve their performance goals. Her projects range in building type and are located nationwide. She has supported the US Green Building Council to inform updates to the last two versions of the LEED rating system\, participated on the LEED Steering Committee\, and served as one of a few LEED project reviewers for GBCI. Ms. Greenwood currently serves on the LEED Advisory Committee. GCG has demonstrated experience managing projects that pursue LEED\, SITES\, the WELL Building Standard\, Fitwel\, Green Globes\, ENERGY STAR\, and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). Ms. Greenwood founded her consulting firm\, the Greenwood Consulting Group based here in Kansas City in 2012 and it is a certified Women’s Owned Business. She is passionate about improving the health and lifestyle of building occupants through the WELL Building Standard and has had several speaking engagements on the topic. Sara is a LEED-Fellow. Green Globes Fellow and WELL Faculty. \nRalph Bicknese\, Principal\, Hellmuth + Bicknese Architects\nRalph Bicknese\, AIA is an architect\, LEED BD+C\, LEED Fellow and principal at Hellmuth + Bicknese Architects. Ralph is passionate about integrating design excellence with exemplary environmental performance to evoke positive impact and enrich life – at scale. Ralph is a mentor to students and professionals and a frequent lecturer/presenter on sustainability in design. He has served on several sustainability committees locally and nationally and has participated in several sustainability master plans\, 55 LEED projects\, including at several of the region’s major cultural and educational institutions\, and several seeking Living Building Challenge\, zero-positive energy\, and SITES certifications.

DESCRIPTION: \nWe are excited to engage our community in helping us design fab new swag to reflect our new brand!\nWe kicked off 2023 with our new name\, website and logo – the culmination of an amazing collective effort by the MGGBC team and our volunteer members! We are excited to carry this creative momentum into 2024 with a contest to design fab new swag that celebrates our new brand and embodies the spirit of our new tagline “Connecting people\, places\, and planet.” \nThe contest is open to everyone. Participants can submit up to 3 designs. \nStrut Your Creative Stuff! Grab some green\, blue and gray markers (or mouse\, if you prefer digital doodling) and unleash that amazing creativity for a good cause!  \nThe winning design will be selected by our Engagement & Outreach Committee and announced at our State of the Council event on January 29th. The winner will receive bragging rights\, a free T-Shirt with their design\, and a $50 gift card to a Green Dining Alliance restaurant + publicity on our website and via social media! \nREGISTER NOW \n  \nContest Rules\nAll designs must be original creations of the contestant and incorporate the required design components outlined below\, encompassing the Missouri Gateway Green Building Council brand (i.e. colors\, fonts\, logos). Nominees must be a member in good standing with Missouri Gateway Green Building Council must currently serve or have previously served on a committee or as a volunteer with the organization. \nReview or fill out the Online Nomination Form!  \nFor more information\, please see: \n\nNomination Guidelines\nNomination Form (On-line Form)\nBoard of Director Job Descriptions\n\n  \nIn 2015\, MGGBC shifted our board nomination and election process\, and no longer hold general elections. Nominations are accepted from the membership. The Governance Committee collects nominations and ensures eligibility of nominees. The committee then consults a matrix of leadership needs to determine a slate to present to the board for approval. The committee expects to present a slate to the board for discussion at the September 2023 board meeting.

St. Louis County has uniquely fragmented building codes\, as there are 88 municipalities\, many of which do not have the capacity to keep their building codes current. The Safer + Simpler St. Louis County coalition was formed last year to find solutions to create more consistency in building codes and inspections and make it easier to do business in our region.
