And how will this impact human health and wellbeing? It’s critical to note that LEED v5 recognizes that climate change will be the largest threat to human health. As such\, LEED v5\, particularly the indoor environmental quality category\, supports adaptation for current and future climate through the use of future weather files and the careful identification of vulnerable populations. LEED v5 prioritizes air quality transparency along with improved air quality monitoring strategies for both indoor and outdoor air. Once LEED projects consider and adapt to pressing physiological health threats\, they can also prioritize designing for mental health and wellness. By incorporating more universal and inclusive design principles\, LEED will empower projects to design for physically and mentally diverse populations. This not only means improving access to spaces and amenities throughout the building\, but also approaching existing strategies\, like acoustic design\, thermal comfort\, and lighting through a new lens. \nLEED v5 is deeply focused on identifying and alleviating the actual\, most critical threats to occupant physical health. That said\, the next version of LEED considers mental health and wellness more in-depth than ever before. Through new strategies\, like biophilic and universal design\, and improvements to existing strategies\, like daylight\, quality views and thermal comfort\, mental health and wellbeing will be at the forefront of LEED going forward and this session will demonstrate how. \nREGISTER FOR THE JANUARY WEBINAR \n\nFebruary: Overview of LEED v5: Taking action on climate\, quality of life\, and ecology\nMarch: LEED v5: Swift Climate Action\, Enriched Quality of Life\, and Advanced Land Use and Biodiversity\nApril: Navigating Smart Building Certifications for Sustainable Futures\nMay: LEED and Upfront Carbon Emissions: A Comprehensive Look at A1-A5 Embodied Carbon in Building Construction\nJune: LEED EBOM Plays Nice with WELL Health-Safety at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland\nJuly: Smart Building Charrette\, circa 2030: Realizing the Promise of High-Performance Green Buildings\nAugust: Exceeding ESG Commitments with LEED for Communities\nSeptember: Looking to the Future: Utilizing LEED as a Tool for Adaptive Reuse Projects\nOctober: LEED Zero Project Profiles\nNovember: Implementing the Future of LEED with LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance\nDecember: Beneficial Electrification in Northern Climates\nJanuary 2025: Inclusive Pathways to Health in LEED v5: Harnessing Biophilic and Universal Design

The act of preserving historic structures\, landmarks\, and landscapes is a gift to future generations\, so that they may appreciate the rich and complex foundation on which modern society has been built. Green buildings are typically thought of as ones newly built\, but many historic buildings can be just as sustainable if they are properly maintained and operated. Moreover\, incorporating an existing building into a development project is a green building strategy. All kinds of buildings and spaces enhance their energy efficiency\, indoor air quality and other sustainable features through LEED certification. \nThis session will explore four projects that used LEED certification to support sustainable adaptive reuse.. Speakers representing the projects’ multidisciplinary teams will investigate their approaches to building design\, systems\, materials\, and other elements of deep-energy retrofits\, while respecting the legacies of these existing buildings. Originally constructed in 1866\, CMC earned LEED Platinum certification under LEED v4.1 EB+OM in 2019. With the support of pro-bono work by their LEED consultants\, Emerald Built Environments\, CMC started their pursuit of the WELL Health-Safety certification in 2020 during the pandemic. CMC was able to utilize much of the work completed through the LEED Platinum EB+OM efforts to ultimately earn WELL Health-Safety certification as well. \nThis presentation will delve into consistencies between EB+OM-approved green cleaning products and WELL Health-Safety product requirements and how CMC was able to build upon policies and procedures implemented in the LEED EB+OM process when pursuing WELL Health-Safety cleaning and sanitation features\, such as Support Handwashing and Selected Preferred Cleaning Products. In pursuing WELL Health Safety Air and Water Quality features\, the museum and LEED project engineer were also able to utilize ventilation and air treatment assessments previously performed during the EB+OM certification to inform the WELL Health-Safety Assessments. The museum’s commitment to clean air and water quality\, kicked off by its LEED certification\, made the WELL ‘Monitor Air and Water’ feature a no-brainer. CMC’s process of drafting WELL Health-Safety policies captured many of the procedures and practices already being implemented. \nThe presentation will close by looking towards CMC’s recertification\, to take place three years out from initial certification under LEED EB+OM. The presenters will share how Arc is being utilized to gauge the progress and ability of the museum to maintain its operational efficiencies. \nREGISTER FOR THE JUNE 7 WEBINAR \n  \n\nFebruary: Overview of LEED v5: Taking action on climate\, quality of life\, and ecology\nMarch: LEED v5: Swift Climate Action\, Enriched Quality of Life\, and Advanced Land Use and Biodiversity\nApril: Navigating Smart Building Certifications for Sustainable Futures\nMay: LEED and Upfront Carbon Emissions: A Comprehensive Look at A1-A5 Embodied Carbon in Building Construction\nJune: LEED EBOM Plays Nice with WELL Health-Safety at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland\nJuly: Smart Building Charrette\, circa 2030: Realizing the Promise of High-Performance Green Buildings\nAugust: Exceeding ESG Commitments with LEED for Communities\nSeptember: Looking to the Future: Utilizing LEED as a Tool for Adaptive Reuse Projects\nOctober: LEED Zero Project Profiles\nNovember: Implementing the Future of LEED with LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance\nDecember: Beneficial Electrification in Northern Climates\nJanuary 2025: Inclusive Pathways to Health in LEED v5: Harnessing Biophilic and Universal Design

SUMMARY:Evening Program: $elling the Value of $ustainable Homes
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to partner with the St. Louis Realtors Urban Affairs Committee for a joint program on how to communicate the value of sustainable homes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n REGISTER NOW \nDemand for sustainable homes is surging\, and it’s not just about saving the planet. A recent study by Freddie Mac revealed that homes with high energy-efficiency ratings sold for 2.7% more than their less eco-friendly counterparts. This “green premium” is attracting both environmentally conscious buyers and those seeking long-term financial benefits. \nWhy the appeal? Sustainable homes offer cost-savings\, reduced environmental impact\, durability\, and healthier indoor living. Driven by environmental awareness\, economic benefits\, and recent government incentives through the Inflation Reduction Act\, the demand for sustainable homes is growing and is expected to continue. With this increased demand and with more sustainable homes entering the market\, sellers and realtors will need to begin expanding their expertise around sustainable home technology so they can communicate its value within the market – especially to prospective buyers. Even though a growing number of homebuyers are interested or open to purchasing a sustainable home\, they may come to the table with questions and concerns\, such as: \n\n\n\nWhat should homeowners look out for when purchasing a home with sustainable technologies? Is it a good investment?\nHow easy is it to maintain sustainable technologies\, and what is the associated cost?\nHow will sustainable technologies be inspected to make sure they are operating correctly and effectively?\n\n\n\nThis program\, hosted in partnership with the St. Louis Realtors Urban Affairs Committee\, seeks to introduce the audience to two key sustainable technologies (solar panels and heat pumps)\, followed by a panel discussion with local experts\, who will address key questions and concerns that come up pertaining to value (cost-savings\, incentives) and maintenance. Attendees will learn key information about green home technology and will be able to communicate the value of sustainable homes to prospective buyers. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PRESENTERS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Eric Schneider\, Director of Business Development\, StraightUp Solar\nEric joined the StraightUp Solar team in 2019. SUMMARY:Lunch Break - Light + Justice: Interiors
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nEveryone deserves good lighting and beneficial darkness\, especially indoors\, where most of us spend most of our time; yet indoor lighting quality\, particularly in public facilities\, is generally neglected for marginalized\, under-resourced\, and vulnerable occupants. Lighting professionals have a unique opportunity to understand and address inequities that disproportionately diminish visual quality for people of color\, the aging\, the impaired\, and the incarcerated. \nThis lunchtime program builds on the Light + Justice discussion of our February 13 Evening Program\, exploring how lighting disparity shows up in interior environments. LightJustice.org co-founder Lya Osborn and St. Louis interior designer Shelley Satke join us to discuss this important topic\, sharing insights into the lighting and interior design approaches that can extend the benefits of quality lighting to all building users. \nFEATURED SPEAKERS: \n\n\nLya Shaffer Osborn is a multidisciplinary designer\, writer\, and advocate for design justice. She is a co-founder of LightJustice.org\, a community resource for addressing the social impact of lighting. She also serves as the North America Regional Director for Unolai Lighting Design\, where for the past seven years\, she has contributed to a wide range of projects and award-winning design efforts on both sides of the Pacific. Lya received a double M.F.A. in Lighting Design and Interior Design from Parsons The New School for Design\, where her thesis work challenged industry norms and incentives that have long defined a designer’s role in community\, and proposed alternative modes of improving accessibility of design resources to the historically underserved. Lya is a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the Illuminating Engineering Society\, and is Community Friendly Lighting Certified. \n\nShelley Satke Niemeier is an award-winning interior designer at SPACE Architects + Designers + Builders\, excelling in hospitality interior design. Shelley’s work has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects St. Louis and Mid-Missouri\, the American Society of Interior Design Missouri East\, and local shelter magazines. Shelley is committed to designing for comfort\, wellness and sustainability\, and she always endeavors to create timeless spaces that will not need to be stripped of trendy materials and lighting in a few years to remain beautiful. She takes a “less is more” approach for visual simplicity and elegance\, and reduced overall consumption of consumer goods. Shelley is an Associate ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and LEED Green Associate. \n  \nBACKGROUND ON LIGHT + JUSTICE\nOn November 4\, 2022\, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) in partnership with lightjustice.org presented a one-day virtual symposium. From their website: “‘Light Justice’ is an idea rooted in an ongoing conversation between Edward Bartholomew and Mark Loeffler\, both lighting designers and IES members\, about their mutual recognition of harmful disparities in lighting quality and inequality in the public realm. In 2020\, they coined the term ‘Light + Justice’ as the title and subject of numerous presentations and published articles exploring the unjust impacts of bad lighting and opportunities for the lighting industry to overcome those social and environmental inequities. As they have come to define it\, ‘Light Justice’ is the practice of planning\, designing\, implementing\, and investing in good lighting for under-resourced communities through a process of stakeholder engagement and community-supported placemaking.” \nREGISTER NOW \nIn 2024\, our Coffee Break Series will transition to a slightly longer Lunch Break Series. These sessions will take place on the 3rd or 4th Fridays from 12:00pm-12:45pm. Join your Green Buildings Are Better community every 3rd or 4th Friday on Zoom for a quick (free) lunch break discussing green building and sustainability hot topics with local and national featured guests! Check our CoffeeBreakPlaylist on YouTube for recordings of our 2023 sessions! \nConsent to use photographic images: \nThis event will be recorded and shared on our website. As they have come to define it\, ‘Light Justice’ is the practice of planning\, designing\, implementing\, and investing in good lighting for under-resourced communities through a process of stakeholder engagement and community-supported placemaking.” \nADMISSION\nFree – Missouri Gateway Green Building Council – Members\nFree – NSBE St. Louis Gateway Professionals – Members\nFree – Students\n$25.00 – NON-Members \nREGISTER NOW \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Thanks to our Evening Program Sponsor!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n CONTINUING EDUCATION: Submitted for AIA CES. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nGain a basic understanding of key lighting concepts such as color\, glare\, light pollution\, and visual hierarchy.\nIdentify and recognize the differences between poor lighting and quality lighting in neighborhoods.\nUnderstand the priorities of different stakeholder groups (communities\, residents\, police\, City Streets Department) to gain insight into the complex decision-making process for street lighting.\nLearn actionable strategies and steps that can be taken to improve lighting in your own community.\n\nCONSENT TO USE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES\nThis event will be recorded and shared on our website.
