SUMMARY:Evening Program: $elling the Value of $ustainable Homes
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to partner with the St. Louis Realtors Urban Affairs Committee for a joint program on how to communicate the value of sustainable homes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n REGISTER NOW \nDemand for sustainable homes is surging\, and it’s not just about saving the planet. A recent study by Freddie Mac revealed that homes with high energy-efficiency ratings sold for 2.7% more than their less eco-friendly counterparts. This “green premium” is attracting both environmentally conscious buyers and those seeking long-term financial benefits. \nWhy the appeal? Sustainable homes offer cost-savings\, reduced environmental impact\, durability\, and healthier indoor living. Driven by environmental awareness\, economic benefits\, and recent government incentives through the Inflation Reduction Act\, the demand for sustainable homes is growing and is expected to continue. With this increased demand and with more sustainable homes entering the market\, sellers and realtors will need to begin expanding their expertise around sustainable home technology so they can communicate its value within the market – especially to prospective buyers. Even though a growing number of homebuyers are interested or open to purchasing a sustainable home\, they may come to the table with questions and concerns\, such as: \n\n\n\nWhat should homeowners look out for when purchasing a home with sustainable technologies? Is it a good investment?\nHow easy is it to maintain sustainable technologies\, and what is the associated cost?\nHow will sustainable technologies be inspected to make sure they are operating correctly and effectively?\n\n\n\nThis program\, hosted in partnership with the St. Louis Realtors Urban Affairs Committee\, seeks to introduce the audience to two key sustainable technologies (solar panels and heat pumps)\, followed by a panel discussion with local experts\, who will address key questions and concerns that come up pertaining to value (cost-savings\, incentives) and maintenance. Attendees will learn key information about green home technology and will be able to communicate the value of sustainable homes to prospective buyers. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PRESENTERS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Eric Schneider\, Director of Business Development\, StraightUp Solar\nEric joined the StraightUp Solar team in 2019. SUMMARY:Lunch Break - Light + Justice: Interiors
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nEveryone deserves good lighting and beneficial darkness\, especially indoors\, where most of us spend most of our time; yet indoor lighting quality\, particularly in public facilities\, is generally neglected for marginalized\, under-resourced\, and vulnerable occupants. Lighting professionals have a unique opportunity to understand and address inequities that disproportionately diminish visual quality for people of color\, the aging\, the impaired\, and the incarcerated. \nThis lunchtime program builds on the Light + Justice discussion of our February 13 Evening Program\, exploring how lighting disparity shows up in interior environments. LightJustice.org co-founder Lya Osborn and St. Louis interior designer Shelley Satke join us to discuss this important topic\, sharing insights into the lighting and interior design approaches that can extend the benefits of quality lighting to all building users. \nFEATURED SPEAKERS: \n\n\nLya Shaffer Osborn is a multidisciplinary designer\, writer\, and advocate for design justice. She is a co-founder of LightJustice.org\, a community resource for addressing the social impact of lighting. She also serves as the North America Regional Director for Unolai Lighting Design\, where for the past seven years\, she has contributed to a wide range of projects and award-winning design efforts on both sides of the Pacific. Lya received a double M.F.A. in Lighting Design and Interior Design from Parsons The New School for Design\, where her thesis work challenged industry norms and incentives that have long defined a designer’s role in community\, and proposed alternative modes of improving accessibility of design resources to the historically underserved. Lya is a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the Illuminating Engineering Society\, and is Community Friendly Lighting Certified. \n\nShelley Satke Niemeier is an award-winning interior designer at SPACE Architects + Designers + Builders\, excelling in hospitality interior design. Shelley’s work has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects St. Louis and Mid-Missouri\, the American Society of Interior Design Missouri East\, and local shelter magazines. Shelley is committed to designing for comfort\, wellness and sustainability\, and she always endeavors to create timeless spaces that will not need to be stripped of trendy materials and lighting in a few years to remain beautiful. She takes a “less is more” approach for visual simplicity and elegance\, and reduced overall consumption of consumer goods. Shelley is an Associate ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and LEED Green Associate. \n  \nBACKGROUND ON LIGHT + JUSTICE\nOn November 4\, 2022\, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) in partnership with lightjustice.org presented a one-day virtual symposium. From their website: “‘Light Justice’ is an idea rooted in an ongoing conversation between Edward Bartholomew and Mark Loeffler\, both lighting designers and IES members\, about their mutual recognition of harmful disparities in lighting quality and inequality in the public realm. In 2020\, they coined the term ‘Light + Justice’ as the title and subject of numerous presentations and published articles exploring the unjust impacts of bad lighting and opportunities for the lighting industry to overcome those social and environmental inequities. As they have come to define it\, ‘Light Justice’ is the practice of planning\, designing\, implementing\, and investing in good lighting for under-resourced communities through a process of stakeholder engagement and community-supported placemaking.” \nREGISTER NOW \nIn 2024\, our Coffee Break Series will transition to a slightly longer Lunch Break Series. These sessions will take place on the 3rd or 4th Fridays from 12:00pm-12:45pm. Join your Green Buildings Are Better community every 3rd or 4th Friday on Zoom for a quick (free) lunch break discussing green building and sustainability hot topics with local and national featured guests! Check our CoffeeBreakPlaylist on YouTube for recordings of our 2023 sessions! \nConsent to use photographic images: \nThis event will be recorded and shared on our website. Registration/attendance at\, or participation in Missouri Gateway Green Building Council programs and activities constitutes an agreement by the registrants to allow the organization to use and distribute (both now and in the future) the attendee’s image\, in photographs\, video\, and electronic reproductions of such events and activities.

SUMMARY:ILFI Member Webinar - Climate Positive Design: Beyond Buildings
DESCRIPTION:What role can our sites\, landscapes\, and infrastructure projects play in reducing emissions while increasing sequestration\, and can these projects sequester more carbon than they emit? How can new tools and knowledge help inform site and building decisions throughout a project’s design phases? \nWhen ILFI debuted the Zero Carbon Certification\, it was the first of its kind. With the recent and rapid increase of data and newly available tools\, we can now expand our design considerations beyond the building and into the environment\, reaching the aspirational goal of climate positivity. \nLandscape architects Pamela Conrad of Climate Positive Design and Chris Hardy from Sasaki will discuss strategies that empower designers of the exterior built environment to reduce carbon emissions and increase sequestration. They will present techniques and tools to calculate the carbon balance of landscape and infrastructural materials and strategies\, both now and throughout a project’s lifespan. \nThis is the third of three complimentary ILFI webinars that Missouri Gateway Green Building Council members to attend for free. To access this webinar\, you must be an active Missouri Gateway Green Building Council member. Access the Zoom registration and partner code here. You will be prompted to login. \n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Evening Program - Connecting ESG Goals with LEED: Process Benefits\, Resources
DESCRIPTION:See list of October 10\, 2023 Attendees. \nWe are excited to partner with USGBC and the St. Louis Regional Green Business Challenge for a dynamic exploration of ESG (Environmental-Social-Governance). \nFor more than 25 years\, the green building community has shared a vision for market transformation: defining and recognizing places that benefit people and the environment. The result is thousands of certified green building projects that are more efficient\, less polluting\, and healthier for occupants. Over the last decade\, our industry has seen the emergence of environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) reporting and sustainable finance as new tools for market transformation. Green building programs like LEED have proven to be an important element in the world of ESG reporting and sustainable finance. Alongside LEED\, we see companies using the Arc performance platform to collect data\, manage and benchmark progress\, measure impact and improve performance to work toward their ESG goals. \nThis program will frame the building and operational LEED standards as pivotal to corporate sustainability strategies and achieving ESG goals. We will hear how companies from various sectors are approaching ESG strategy through a robust panel discussion of ESG reporting masters\, moderated by St. Louis Green Business Challenge Manager\, Jean Ponzi. As a bonus\, the program will include a “hot off the presses” high-level overview of LEEDv5\, USGBC’s newest version of the rating system. \nSPEAKER\nSheri Brezinka\, USGBC Regional Director\, West North Central                               \nSheri oversees USGBC market transformation and development activities across the Midwest. SUMMARY:Evening Program - A Practical Approach to Carbon Neutral Master Planning
DESCRIPTION:See list of August 15\, 2023 Attendees \nProgram Presented in partnership with: \n \nREGISTER NOW \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCampuses bring our communities together – providing education\, training\, and jobs for millions of people in the Midwest in cities\, small towns\, and rural communities. Central plants are the lifeblood of campuses\, whether they are focused on education\, research\, healthcare\, or manufacturing. While we know that a carbon neutral future is coming\, priorities are often set on maintaining operations\, planning for the future\, redundancy\, and resiliency\, which continue to take precedence over carbon reduction. Historically\, marginalized communities have been differentially impacted by poor environmental planning and at times by environmental catastrophes. Creating low or zero carbon central plants on our local campuses and in the buildings they serve is one of many steps toward environmental justice. It is our job as built environment professionals to be aware of the impact of our work and this is one area where we can do right both for our clients and the communities they serve. \nSPEAKER: Michael Swenson is a Senior Associate at BR+A Consulting Engineers. His work focuses on the energy planning\, including carbon neutral master planning\, vetting energy conservation measures in design\, commissioning of building systems in construction\, and post-occupancy measurement and verification. SUMMARY:Benchmarking 101 + Help Session - June 2023
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER for this FREE Benchmarking 101 and Help Session!\nPresented in partnership with Building Energy Exchange St. Louis & the City of St. Louis’ Office of Building Performance \nWe will start with a presentation to cover the basics of benchmarking\, how to use the free\, online benchmarking tool ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager\, provide an overview of the City of St. Louis’ benchmarking requirements and how to report data to the City. Then we’ll break to provide one-on-one assistance with benchmarking your building’s energy and water use. See below for what you should bring if you need one-on-one assistance! \nPlease note: this presentation is free and open to anyone who wants to learn about benchmarking and saving money on energy bills. You need not own a building in the City of St. Louis to attend – you can even bring your home energy bill to practice benchmarking! \nWhat is Benchmarking?\nBenchmarking is the process of tracking your building’s energy and/or water use and comparing your performance to similar buildings and to past performance. Benchmarking is the first step in determining how to conserve resources\, reduce operating costs\, and reduce environmental impacts. ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is the tool that the City of St. Louis and many\, many other use for benchmarking a building’s energy\, water and waste. It is a free and secure online tool that tracks energy and water consumption\, as well as greenhouse gas emissions. Any building can use ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager to understand their energy\, water\, and waste performance – schools\, governments\, congregations\, businesses and retail stores. \nAbout the City of St. Louis’s Building Energy Awareness Ordinance (Benchmarking Requirements) \nOn January 27\, 2017\, the City of St. Louis Board of Aldermen unanimously passed an energy benchmarking ordinance that requires municipal\, institutional\, commercial and multifamily residential buildings whose square footage is equal to or greater than 50\,000 to track and report their energy and water usage annually to the City’s Building Division (Office of Building Performance). Privately owned buildings are required to benchmark and submit data by May 1 of each year using the free\, online tool ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Full details about the Building Energy Awareness Ordinance are available at www.stlbenchmarking.com. \nREGISTER \nTo Bring if You Need Assistance with Benchmarking:\nIn order for this event to be a success\, each building representative needing one-on-one assistance should bring: \n\nLaptop or Tablet\nEnergy Use Data – Attendees should bring at least 13 consecutive months of utility bills for all fuel types used in the building. Bring the number of units of each energy type used\, not just the dollar amount of the utility fee.\n\nAccess historical utility data using your past bills\, or by setting up accounts on your utility websites: www.amerenmissouri.com and www.spireenergy.com.\n\n\nWater Use Data: Attendees should bring water usage and cost data for a period that covers at least 13 consecutive months\n\nAccess historical utility data using your past bills\, or by setting up an account on the St. Louis City Water Division’s website: www.stlwater.com\n\n\nProperty Use Details:\n\nAll properties:\nProperty Name\nProperty Address\nTotal Gross Floor Area of Property. Don’t know your GFA? Check St. Louis City’s Property Database.\nYear Built\nAdditional required information varies by building type. Refer to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager’s Data Collection Worksheet.\n\n\n\nConsent to Use of Photographic Images:\nRegistration/attendance at\, or participation in Missouri Gateway Green Building Council programs and activities constitutes an agreement by the registrants to allow the organization to use and distribute (both now and in the future) the attendee’s image\, in photographs\, video\, and electronic reproductions of such events and activities.
