SUMMARY:Register Your School for the 2024-2025 Green Schools Quest!
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the annual Green Schools Quest: A Project-Based Challenge! \nThis program\, which is a part of the Show-Me Green Schools suite\, invites PreK-12 schools in Missouri and Southern Illinois to devise and implement creative\, effective and no/low-cost sustainability practices at their school with the help of a Green Mentor. Each participating school forms a team of students (can be a club\, class\, grade level\, or entire school) which is organized by one adult member of a school’s community (teacher\, administrator\, staff\, or parent) who serves as their team’s facilitator. The school is then paired with a Green Mentor from the community who helps with project ideas and resources. Teams engage in their chosen sustainability project from October through March and submit their outcomes for a chance to win cash prizes. Registration deadline is September 15th for schools. \n\nLearn more at showmegreenschools.org/gsq\nVisit our Frequently Asked Questions\nClick here to watch a video showcasing last year’s projects and winners.\n\nRegister your school through our Online Registration Form!

The district is particularly unique in its unflinching belief that student\, staff\, community\, and environmental wellness cannot be achieved without intentional work to recognize and dismantle systems of racial inequity and exclusion. \nBy centering “Joy and Well-Being” in all district work and integrating social and emotional health into everyday school experiences and relationships\, SDUC offers its students everything from wellness lounges to trauma specialists\, public art events to a Restorative Practices course. The district calls this SEEAL: Social\, Emotional\, Equitable and Academic Learning. This program has achieved national attention for successes in community engagement\, increased joy and well-being\, and reduced disciplinary events. It has also led to the creation of Ubuntu circles to build healthy\, authentic relationships between all members of the school community\, and student representation on the school board.\nSDUC is also a leader in project-based environmental and sustainability education that gets students outdoors and active\, and uses a comprehensive tiered indoor/outdoor “green curriculum” that intentionally progresses from PreK-12. \nIn their commitment to the health of students and communities\, the district has implemented a wide range of green practices across district facilities\, including the construction two LEED certified elementary schools\, onsite solar\, limits on vehicle idling\, CO2 monitoring\, integrated pest management\, and an outdoor STEAM lab and rain garden at every school. \nThis work\, along with years of eco-minded improvements to each school in the district\, led to national recognition this year by the U.S. Department of Education through the Missouri Green Schools (MGS) program. Brief information on MGS and how attendees can find green schools contacts in their states will be presented. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExamine what Well-Being and Joy really mean in the context of school climate.\nDiscuss the role of racial equity\, student voice and social action in empowering students to be present and aware.\nDemonstrate how school climate leads to positive environmental practices.\nExplore the connection between equity\, voice\, action\, joy\, well-being\, sustainability and Green Schools\, and identify frameworks for integrating these practices in your school.\n\n  \nREGISTER NOW for the 2023 Green Schools Conference. \nSome text content from this event posting was sourced directly from greenschoolsconference.org.

SUMMARY:Connect on the Quest - Connecting GSQ to Missouri Green Schools
DESCRIPTION:Connect on the Quest:\nConnecting GSQ to Missouri Green Schools \nA monthly virtual speakers series sharing Green Schools Quest project stories and resources to support schools in their green schools endeavors. \nThe March 31st Connect on the Quest will focus on Connecting Green Schools Quest to Missouri Green Schools.  \nEach year\, students across the state implement no/low-cost sustainability projects at their schools with the help of their school sponsor and Green Mentor through the Green Schools Quest: A Project-Based Challenge. Over 200 schools have participated\, many for multiple years\, since the program launched in 2013. The impact of their projects is astonishing.\n\nCurrently in pilot\, Missouri Green Schools is a new statewide recognition program which supports schools in taking a systems-based approach to identify and advance green schools practices and which also serves as the conduit for the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools award.  \nThe Green Schools Quest and Missouri Green Schools go hand in hand – either can be an entry point to the other and schools can participate in both simultaneously. Both include opportunities for recognition and celebrate participants’ accomplishments. \nIn this session\, we’ll walk through examples of how a school might participate in both programs simultaneously using the criteria for one to guide and satisfy criteria for the other – leveraging both programs together for greater impact!

SUMMARY:Connect on the Quest: A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety - How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet
DESCRIPTION:Connect on the Quest – for any climate action advocate – green school mentor – teacher – community member – all are welcome – Wednesday\, February 8\, 2023 @ 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm\, online. \nREGISTER \nThose inheriting our planet’s environmental problems expect to encounter challenges\, but they may not have the skills to grapple with the feelings of powerlessness and despair that may arise when they confront this seemingly intractable situation. \nDrawing on a decade of experience leading and teaching in college environmental studies programs\, Sarah Jaquette Ray has created an “existential tool kit” for youth who are reenergizing global environmental activism – the “climate generation.” Combining insights from psychology\, sociology\, social movements\, mindfulness\, and the environmental humanities\, Ray explains why and how we need to let go of eco-guilt\, resist burnout\, and cultivate resilience while advocating for climate justice. Ray is co-editing an edited collection for educators called An Existential Toolkit for Climate Justice Educators\, and has developed a workshop to help educators bring the science of emotions into environmental education\, called the Climate Wisdom Lab. She speaks extensively on climate justice and emotions\, and has written for the LA Times\, The Scientific American\, The Cairo Review of Global Affairs\, Zocalo Public Square\, and other venues. \nSeveral GSQ Participants will share out updates on their projects! \nWHERE\nVirtual event via Zoom.\nRegistrants will receive login details prior to the event. \nADMISSION\nFREE.
