SUMMARY:Evening Program - Building Resilience: Collaborative Strategies for Flood Mitigation in Cahokia Heights & Brentwood
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nWe are excited to partner with the National Society of Black Engineers – Gateway Chapter for a discussion on regional flooding challenges\, including stormwater and flash flooding\, exploring how municipalities\, communities\, engineers and designers are addressing and preparing for local environmental impacts from climate change. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Between polar vortex winter storms paralyzing midwestern cities to four raging wildfires in Los Angeles wiping out entire neighborhoods\, we are immersed in cataclysmic weather events that are more intense\, frequent and damaging due to climate change. Like all intensifying weather and natural disaster events across the globe\, the specific threats depend on location and context – and magnify the impact of existing risks in a particular place based on climate\, topography\, historic and current development trends\, and more. \nHere in the St. Louis metro region\, our location along the Mississippi River and at the confluence of several large rivers places us at particular risk to flooding. Climate change promises to take advantage of existing vulnerabilities in the system and exacerbate impacts to our cities\, communities\, livelihoods and homes. In an effort to strengthen local resilience against such risks\, regional entities and organizations are coming together with local municipalities and communities to develop strategies to mitigate damage and protect communities\, while improving the resilience of the region as a whole. \nJoin us for a timely discussion on regional flooding challenges – including stormwater and flash flooding – exploring how municipalities\, communities\, engineers and designers are addressing and preparing for local environmental impacts from climate change. We’ll hear about regional planning and mitigation efforts\, then learn about two local communities – Cahokia Heights (IL) and Brentwood (MO) – examining the history of flooding and community impact\, and the mitigation strategies being pursued and implemented. \nSpeakers \n\nMatt Jones\, Project Manager\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\nNicole Nelson\, Equity Legal Services & Ms. Yvette Lyles\, Cahokia Heights resident\nEric Gruenenfelder\, Director of Parks & Recreation\, City of Brentwood & Elise Ibendahl\, Global Principal\, Flood Modeling and Planning\, Jacobs – Brentwood Bound\n\n  \nADMISSIONThis event is free to attend\, but please register! \nREGISTER NOW \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Speakers\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Matt Jones\, Project Manager\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – St. Louis District \nMatt Jones is a Project Manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, St. Louis District. Reach out to your MO Gateway Green Building Council staff at info@mogreenbuildings.org. \nREGISTER FOR THE MARCH WEBINAR \nMarch 7 | LEED v5 as a Tool for Decarbonizing the Built Environment\nLEED v5 prioritizes decarbonization. This session will describe how LEED’s newest rating system was redesigned to provide users with a framework for decarbonizing the built environment and to put buildings on a 1.5 degree Celsius pathway. \nBuilding design\, construction\, and operations have a dominant impact on global carbon emissions because of the scale of the building sector and its range of emission sources. Direct impacts include emissions from energy used in buildings\, refrigerant emissions\, and emissions from the creation of products used in buildings. And indirect impacts include the emissions from transportation going to and from buildings. \nAs a multi-attribute certification\, LEED is uniquely well-positioned to address all the emissions impacted by building design and operations. LEED v5 has been crafted to be as effective as possible at reducing carbon emissions from all sources and to provide buildings with an intuitive recipe for achieving those reductions. \nJoin key technical contributors to LEED v5 as they provide an overview of the LEED Building Design and Construction rating system\, an introduction to the LEED v5 impact areas\, and how LEED v5 was redesigned to deliver ultra-low carbon buildings. \nREGISTER FOR THE MARCH WEBINAR \n2025 Schedule \n\nFebruary 7 | Live | Green Careers\, Bright Futures: Strategies for Success in the Sustainability and Advanced Energy Workforce Pipeline\nMarch 7 | LEED v5 as a Tool for Decarbonizing the Built Environment\nApril 4 | Live  | Digging into SITES \nMay 2 | New Launch for Real Estate Portfolios: Accelerating Action\, Performance\, and Verification\nJune 6 | Live | Green Finance Tools and Resources\nJuly 11 | Implementing LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance Worldwide \nAugust 1 | Live | LEEDv5 Updates and Discussion\nSeptember 5 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\nOctober 3 | Live | TRUE Total Resource Management\nNovember 7 | Equity at Scale: Exploring LEED’s Role in Creating More Just Buildings and Communities\nDecember 5 | Live | Information Forthcoming\nJanuary 2026 | Getting Green for Green: Using Sustainable Finance Strategies for Green Building Investments

SUMMARY:Evening Program - Mass Timber Construction – From Conception to Life Cycle Analysis
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nWith an increased focus on limiting environmental impact and reducing carbon emissions in our built environment\, architecture and construction professionals are increasingly exploring mass timber as a key strategy for creating greener\, healthier buildings. Mass timber can be used in place of steel or concrete to create structures that offer durable\, cost-effective performance with less embodied carbon. Still\, while mass timber offers environmental\, budgetary and aesthetic benefits\, the process for evaluating its application within specific projects can be complex. With mass timber’s growing popularity\, teams are learning how to navigate this complex decision-making given project parameters such as building typology\, height\, location\, budget\, timeline\, and sustainability goals. \nThis program aims to provide attendees with a deeper understanding of the environmental benefits and potential applications of mass timber as well as a road map for teams on how to evaluate the potential application of mass timber in your projects. Led by industry experts from WoodWorks\, HDR\, Clayco-Lamar Johnson Collaborative and Trivers\, the session will provide actionable insights for how to apply mass timber and realize its full potential in the built environment. Speakers will share key insights from real-word projects that will help attendees understand the best applications for mass timber and how best to make the case to clients considering cost-benefit analysis\, life cycle assessment and budget constraints. \nSpeakers: \n\nErika Winters-Downey\, Director\, Sustainable Structures at Clayco-Lamar Johnson Collaborative\nColin Rohlfing\, Vice President | Director of Sustainable Development at HDR\nRoss Welch\, Senior Project Architect | Associate at Trivers\n\nModerated by Jason Bahr\, Regional Director at WoodWorks \nADMISSIONFree – Members of Missouri Gateway Green Building Council and full time students. SUMMARY:Monthly Program - Moving the Needle On Building Performance in St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nWe are excited to partner with the Building Energy Exchange – St. Louis to take a look at local building performance data and to discuss ways we can work together towards a more energy efficient and climate resilient future! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n St. Louis has been a leader in moving the needle on buildings here in the Midwest\, working to make our buildings cleaner and healthier places for our community. The Building Energy Awareness Ordinance passed in the City of St. Louis in 2017 and requires most buildings over 50\,000 square feet to benchmark and report their energy and water use annually. Compliance rates have risen to around 90%. Following in the City’s footsteps\, Clayton recently passed a similar ordinance for buildings over 100\,000 square feet. This simple task opens many doors that we didn’t have the information to unlock before. Join us for a discussion with local experts and stakeholders about what we can learn from the valuable information that benchmarking has provided so far. What story does it tell us about our buildings and how they’re performing now? How are our buildings performing compared to national averages and the City’s Building Energy Performance Standard?* What opportunities does it reveal? How can we use this data to unlock the hidden potential in our buildings – driving further energy efficiency improvements\, reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, and boosting local economic growth and job creation within the City of St Louis and the broader region \n*Building on the 2017 Ordinance requiring benchmarking\, the City of St. Louis passed a Building Energy Performance Standard Ordinance (BEPS) in 2020\, which requires that all municipal\, institutional\, commercial and multifamily buildings equal to or greater than 50\,000 square feet must consume energy at or below a standard set by the City. The BEPS aligns with the City’s climate goals and its Pathways to 100% Clean Energy report which recommends a BEPS. Pursuing this policy also aligns with the City’s goals in making significant carbon reductions. \n \n \n \n \n \n ADMISSIONFree – but please register! \nREGISTER NOW \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Speakers\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Adam Rustige\, Director of Energy Analytics\, Saint Louis University\nAdam Rustige has been the Director of Energy Analytics at St. Louis University since October 2024. To achieve sustainable and resilience commitments\, USGBC and GBCI are scaling our expertise and products to support not just buildings\, but entire real estate portfolios. \nUSGBC and GBCI have gathered expertise from more than 100 real estate portfolio owners and managers to launch a third-party verification of key sustainability performance metrics for real estate portfolios. In the first of several planned releases\, the new verification provides a supplement to the rapidly evolving sustainability and climate reporting landscape. \nThis session features practical insights and tools from portfolio managers across diverse building types and new tools to drive large-scale improvements at the portfolio-level. Attendees will hear on-the-ground examples of how portfolios are making progress towards short- and long-term goals and the benefits of providing verified transparency to their stakeholders. \nBuilding portfolios looking to scale up their work should attend this session\, especially for small—to medium-sized organizations\, asset managers\, business units or brands\, privately held portfolios\, and public sector portfolios. \nREGISTER FOR THE MAY 2 WEBINAR \n2025 Schedule \n\nJune 6 | Live | Green Finance Tools and Resources\nJuly 11 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\nAugust 1 | Live | LEEDv5 Updates and Discussion\nSeptember 5 | Digging into SITES\nOctober 3 | Live | TRUE Total Resource Management\nNovember 7 | Equity at Scale: Exploring LEED’s Role in Creating More Just Buildings and Communities\nDecember 5 | Live | Information Forthcoming\nJanuary 2026 | Getting Green for Green: Using Sustainable Finance Strategies for Green Building Investments
