But how do we understand the ways in which social equity and quality of life is explored at these differing scales? \nThis session takes a closer look at sustainability and the development of LEED v5 rating systems through the lens of social impact. Hear perspectives from the U.S. Green Building Council\, the LEED Equity Working Group\, as well as industry practitioners in design\, development\, and planning to engage in a discussion around how equity represents itself within the scope of buildings and the larger urban fabric. \nBuilt environment professionals face the dual mission of meeting environmental standards while advancing social inclusivity and justice in the face of climate change. Panelists will review key components of equity embedded within LEED v5 and beyond as LEED for Cities and Communities continues to develop\, examining the significance and impact on project development. \nSpeakers will share practical guidance on the new LEED v5 Social Impact Assessment\, providing attendees with tools to drive inclusivity in their work\, and equipping participants with essential skills in community engagement and outreach\, vital for gaining local stakeholder support. Staying updated with evolving LEED standards is crucial for industry competitiveness\, appealing to socially responsible clients and investors. \nThis session is pivotal for architects\, planners\, policymakers\, and advocates\, empowering them to lead positive change by crafting buildings and spaces that are not only environmentally sustainable but also socially inclusive and equitable—a crucial step toward a more just and sustainable future. Gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in advancing equity in the built environment\, including potential barriers to implementation\, measurement methodologies\, and the need for ongoing advocacy and education. \nThis presentation was recorded at Greenbuild 2024\, which took place from November 12-15\, 2024 at the Philadelphia Convention Center. \nREGISTER FOR THE OCTOBER 3 WEBINAR \n\nFebruary 7 | Live | Green Careers\, Bright Futures: Strategies for Success in the Sustainability and Advanced Energy Workforce Pipeline\nMarch 7 | LEED v5 as a Tool for Decarbonizing the Built Environment\nApril 4 | Live  | Implementing LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance Worldwide\nMay 2 | New Launch for Real Estate Portfolios: Accelerating Action\, Performance\, and Verification\nJune 6 | Live | Green Finance Tools and Resources\nJuly 11 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\nAugust 1 | Live | LEEDv5 Updates and Discussion\nSeptember 5 | Digging into SITES\nOctober 3 | Live | TRUE Total Resource Management\nNovember 7 | Equity at Scale: Exploring LEED’s Role in Creating More Just Buildings and Communities\nDecember 5 | Live | Information Forthcoming\nJanuary 2026 | Getting Green for Green: Using Sustainable Finance Strategies for Green Building Investments

This monumental building\, a construction achievement\, is 12 years old. Like the original building\, built for the 1904 World’s Fair\, the addition was designed to stand for a 100 years or more. Now more than a decade on\, we thought it would be valuable to revisit the construction of this iconic project. In discussion with members of the 2013 project team and building material stakeholders\, we will explore what new advancements in concrete and steel and construction techniques might be used if the addition was built today\, given the industry’s greater focus on embodied carbon. \nParticipants:Julie Bauer\, Architect & Senior Lecturer\, Washington University in St. Louis\, Project Architect for David Chipperfield Architects for the St. Louis Art Museum East BuildingAllison Johnson\, Sustainable Design Leader\, HOKAnthony Alleman\, Vice President – Operations\, Pepper ConstructionLeif Johnson\, Structural Engineering Director\, StructureCraftSam Klucker\, Materials Engineer\, Concrete StrategiesRusty Owings\, Midwest Technical Services Engineer\, AMRIZE/HolcimSean Smith\, Market Development Manager\, New Millennium Steel \nImages: Simon Menges \n  \nADMISSIONFree for Missouri Gateway Green Building Council members & full time students$25 for non-members – not a member yet? SUMMARY:Green Building Break - Leveraging Existing Buildings with the CARE Tool
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \n\nIt’s often said that the greenest building is the one that already exists\, yet until recently this idea lacked robust\, data-backed evidence. As a result\, the carbon benefits of reusing existing buildings are frequently overlooked in climate action strategies\, carbon accounting\, and design decision-making. This gap represents a major missed opportunity for professionals in preservation\, planning\, design\, and policy to better measure their potential impact and advocate more effectively for building reuse. The CARE (Carbon Avoided Retrofit Estimator) Tool addresses this challenge by enabling decision-makers to quantify the carbon benefits of renovating and upgrading existing buildings versus demolishing and constructing new ones. Join us for an introduction to the CARE Tool with architect James Roseberry of Trivers and learn how CARE can be used to estimate the carbon impact of your projects and compare the impact of different design decisions. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n James Roseberry\, AIA\, CDT\, LEED AP BD+C\, Director of Sustainability\, Trivers Associates \nJames is the Director of Sustainability and an Associate with Trivers. He is experienced in historic renovation\, adaptive reuse\, and technical spaces. He has also served a key role on many impactful projects in the St. Louis area. He has contributed to a number of Trivers’ sustainable projects\, including the renovation of January Hall at Washington University\, which received LEED Gold certification. James serves on the Planning Group of the BuildingGreen Small Firm Sustainable Design Leaders Peer Network. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Missouri Gateway Green Building Council\, where he served as 2024 Chair of the MGGBC board of directors and is currently on the Education Committee. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n  \nIn 2024\, our Coffee Break Series transitioned to a slightly longer Green Building Break Series.
