The act of preserving historic structures\, landmarks\, and landscapes is a gift to future generations\, so that they may appreciate the rich and complex foundation on which modern society has been built. Green buildings are typically thought of as ones newly built\, but many historic buildings can be just as sustainable if they are properly maintained and operated. Moreover\, incorporating an existing building into a development project is a green building strategy. All kinds of buildings and spaces enhance their energy efficiency\, indoor air quality and other sustainable features through LEED certification. \nThis session will explore four projects that used LEED certification to support sustainable adaptive reuse.. In practice\, this means expediting action plans\, tracking actions\, and verifying improvements to meet goals across whole organizations and portfolios. \nThis program will bring together sustainability leaders to share strategies and examples of large-scale transformation\, including new tools and programs to verify portfolio-level plans\, actions\, and performance across health\, energy\, biodiversity\, climate risk\, resilience\, water\, waste\, and community. Attendees will learn about new tools available to take action at an unprecedented scale. Presenters will share information about and discuss a soon-to-be-released offering from USGBC and GBCI that will provide third-party review and verification of sustainability actions and performance metrics at the real estate portfolio level. This “Path to Performance at Scale” aims to provide a valuable supplement to the rapidly evolving sustainability and climate reporting landscape. \nSPEAKERS: \n\nSheri Brezinka\, USGBC Regional Director\, West North Central\nSheri oversees USGBC market transformation and development activities across the Midwest. An experienced senior leader in sustainability with a focus on the built environment\, strategic partnerships\, stakeholder engagement and organizational management\, Sheri is a resource to policy makers at the state and local level. She raises awareness about USGBC’s work through public speaking and serving on stakeholder groups. Prior to this role\, Sheri was appointed Executive Director of the USGBC Minnesota Chapter in February 2009\, working with the Board of Directors to strengthen and expand the organization. Before joining USGBC as staff\, Sheri was actively involved as a volunteer leader when she helped form USGBC Minnesota in 2002. With a background in the construction industry\, Sheri brings over 25 years of experience in the building industry. In her previous positions as Director of Marketing for Weis Builders\, Inc. and Adolfson & Peterson Construction\, she developed and led the general contractor’s sustainability programs. \n\nChris Laughman\, LEED AP O+M\, Senior Director\, Sustainability & Energy at Greystar\nChris is an accomplished subject matter expert with over a decade of experience in sustainable real estate operations who got his start in the inaugural class of the Green Business Challenge in 2010. He now leads Greystar’s Sustainability and Energy Platform where he delivers sustainability solutions\, utility bill management oversight\, cost recovery\, and energy strategies that enhance the human experience while positively impacting the triple bottom line across Greystar’s 2\,800 US properties. Chris has been a member of the Missouri Gateway GBC and served as President of the St. Louis IFMA chapter. He helped build support for the City of St. Louis’ Building Energy Awareness Ordinance (benchmarking)\, and served on the team that helped the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Education Center earn its LEED O+M certification before moving to his national position at Greystar. Chris remains an active green building leader\, speaking at industry conferences and panels on the topic of ESG\, data\, and reducing the impact of the built environment. \n\nKaty Mike Smaistrla\, Sustainability Coordinator and Educator\, University of Missouri St. Louis\nKaty Mike moved to STL over ten years ago to change minds and behaviors about the way we use our natural resources. No matter what her formal role may be (be it her previous position as an educator & volunteer coordinator for the Missouri Botanical Garden or now as the sustainability coordinator at the University of Missouri – St. Louis)\, she serves as a community conduit\, connecting people to their bioregion\, their urban environment\, and ultimately\, their identity. Katy Mike serves the UMSL campus in crafting a healthier and more sustainable place for learning & working. When not working in the higher ed sector\, she enjoys working to infuse innovative art & literacy programming into other non-traditional\, transformative programs. Kacey has worked in the private\, non-profit\, and public sectors and is a LEED Green Associate. She holds a Bachelor’s in Community Health from the University of Kansas and a Master’s in Environmental Sustainability and Certificate in Science\, Technology and Public Policy from the University of Michigan. Kacey is leading a LEED v5 Beta project to certify Kansas City\, Missouri’s City Hall building. \n\n\nEd Soltero\, Assistant Vice Chancellor and University Architect\, Facilities Planning & Management\, Washington University\nEd Soltero\, Ph.D.\, FAIA is the Assistant Vice-Chancellor\, FPM\, and University Architect at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he leads the planning and design team and manages initiatives for long-term campus planning\, collaborates with the university’s capital projects team and provides leadership as the university works to reach infrastructure-related sustainability goals. In his previous position at Arizona State University (ASU)\, he led a comprehensive annual capital project portfolio of $1.5B with a strong focus on sustainability\, which garnered local\, regional and national design and sustainability awards. His varied career includes design leadership\, management of multi-functional teams in both private sector firms and institutions\, business development\, project management\, strategic leadership and customer service. Ed has developed an exceptional background in architecture and construction project management during the course of his 39 years of professional experience. Fellowship was conferred upon him by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 for his contributions to the practice of architecture. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional since October 2008. \n\nSara Greenwood\, The Greenwood Consulting Group\nSara Greenwood is a LEED Fellow and sustainability consultant with over 16 years of experience. Her expertise and insight into emerging green building practices and technologies provide a unique perspective for clients pursuing green building certification and sustainable business initiatives. She helps teams manage the certification process to achieve their performance goals. Her projects range in building type and are located nationwide. She has supported the US Green Building Council to inform updates to the last two versions of the LEED rating system\, participated on the LEED Steering Committee\, and served as one of a few LEED project reviewers for GBCI. Ms. Greenwood currently serves on the LEED Advisory Committee. GCG has demonstrated experience managing projects that pursue LEED\, SITES\, the WELL Building Standard\, Fitwel\, Green Globes\, ENERGY STAR\, and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). Ms. Greenwood founded her consulting firm\, the Greenwood Consulting Group based here in Kansas City in 2012 and it is a certified Women’s Owned Business. She is passionate about improving the health and lifestyle of building occupants through the WELL Building Standard and has had several speaking engagements on the topic. Sara is a LEED-Fellow. Green Globes Fellow and WELL Faculty. \nRalph Bicknese\, Principal\, Hellmuth + Bicknese Architects\nRalph Bicknese\, AIA is an architect\, LEED BD+C\, LEED Fellow and principal at Hellmuth + Bicknese Architects. Ralph is passionate about integrating design excellence with exemplary environmental performance to evoke positive impact and enrich life – at scale. Ralph is a mentor to students and professionals and a frequent lecturer/presenter on sustainability in design. He has served on several sustainability committees locally and nationally and has participated in several sustainability master plans\, 55 LEED projects\, including at several of the region’s major cultural and educational institutions\, and several seeking Living Building Challenge\, zero-positive energy\, and SITES certifications.

SUMMARY:Register Your School for the 2024-2025 Green Schools Quest!
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the annual Green Schools Quest: A Project-Based Challenge!  \nThis program\, which is a part of the Show-Me Green Schools suite\, invites PreK-12 schools in Missouri and Southern Illinois to devise and implement creative\, effective and no/low-cost sustainability practices at their school with the help of a Green Mentor. Each participating school forms a team of students (can be a club\, class\, grade level\, or entire school) which is organized by one adult member of a school’s community (teacher\, administrator\, staff\, or parent) who serves as their team’s facilitator. The school is then paired with a Green Mentor from the community who helps with project ideas and resources. Teams engage in their chosen sustainability project from October through March and submit their outcomes for a chance to win cash prizes.
