And how will this impact human health and wellbeing? It’s critical to note that LEED v5 recognizes that climate change will be the largest threat to human health. As such\, LEED v5\, particularly the indoor environmental quality category\, supports adaptation for current and future climate through the use of future weather files and the careful identification of vulnerable populations. LEED v5 prioritizes air quality transparency along with improved air quality monitoring strategies for both indoor and outdoor air. Once LEED projects consider and adapt to pressing physiological health threats\, they can also prioritize designing for mental health and wellness. By incorporating more universal and inclusive design principles\, LEED will empower projects to design for physically and mentally diverse populations. This not only means improving access to spaces and amenities throughout the building\, but also approaching existing strategies\, like acoustic design\, thermal comfort\, and lighting through a new lens. \nLEED v5 is deeply focused on identifying and alleviating the actual\, most critical threats to occupant physical health. That said\, the next version of LEED considers mental health and wellness more in-depth than ever before. The WELL Building Standard® responds to this condition by placing people’s health and wellness at the center of design\, and takes a holistic approach that addresses behavior\, operations and design. Grounded in medical research that explores the connection between buildings and health\, WELL offers a system for evaluating\, measuring and certifying various building features that impact human health across 10 categories – air\, water\, light\, nourishment\, thermal comfort\, materials\, sound\, mind\, community and movement. \nJoin us for this two-part virtual Green Building Break exploring the WELL Building Standard®\, which supports holistic human health and wellness through healthy buildings\, organizations\, and communities. This GBB will take place across two 1-hour sessions on Friday\, January 17th & 24th. We will hear from Council leadership\, visit with committees\, and you’ll have the chance to participate in our State of the Council raffle – more details coming soon! \nThis event is FREE with refreshments provided\, but please register! \nWHERE: Five Oaks on Warson Community Center\n1200 North Warson Rd | Olivette\, MO 63132 \nWHEN: Wednesday\, January 29\, 2025\, 5:00 – 7:00 PM\nRemarks at 6 pm | Raffle Drawings at 6:50\, must be present to win \n\nThis year’s State of the Council venue showcases what it looks like when a community center embraces a community-driven\, holistic approach to going green. Sustainability features include access to daylight and views to the outdoors\, recycled finishes\, native plants and habitat restoration\, stormwater management\, night sky and bird friendly exterior lighting and more. One special feature is a large hickory tree that had to be removed from the site\, which was wood kiln-dried and repurposed as the lobby’s fireplace mantle.
