SUMMARY:Green Building Tour - Jeffrey T. Fort Neuroscience Research Building
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW!  \nJoin us for our annual green building tour – we look forward to visiting the Jeffrey T. Fort Neuroscience Research Building on the Washington University School of Medicine\, which earned LEED Gold certification. Opened in 2024\, the 11-story\, 609\,000-square-foot facility was designed as a central hub for neuroscience research and collaboration at Washington University School of Medicine. The building brings together more than 100 interdisciplinary research teams that were previously spread across multiple locations\, creating a shared environment for scientists studying disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease\, Parkinson’s disease\, ALS\, brain tumors\, psychiatric illnesses\, and other neurological conditions. Organizing researchers around scientific themes instead of academic departments\, the building encourages collaboration across specialties. \nThe tour will identify key sustainability strategies that helped the building earn LEED certification and that reflect Washington University’s broader commitment to sustainability\, operational efficiency\, and the long-term health of both the campus and the surrounding St. Louis community. Sustainability features include high-efficiency chillers and cooling towers\, heat- and energy-recovery technology\, LED lighting throughout the building\, and computer-controlled airflow systems that reduce energy consumption while maintaining safe laboratory conditions. The building also incorporates low-flow plumbing fixtures\, native landscaping\, and energy-efficient ultra-low temperature laboratory freezers that consume less electricity than conventional models. The Healthier Hospital Initiative\, a national effort that encourages the elimination of chemicals\, antimicrobials and flame retardants\, guided the selection of furniture and interior materials. The parking structure also achieved a Parksmart certification and includes 36 electric vehicle charging stations and 100 covered bicycle racks and a bicycle fix-it station. \nWHEN: July 14\, 2026\, 5:30 – 7:30 pm \nWHERE: Jeffrey T.
