After six years of research and development\, SHARC Energy Systems has moved into commercialization of its patented SHARC™ and PIRANHA™ systems. With new offices in Glasgow\, Scotland\, and successful installations across North America\, the UK\, and Australia\, SHARC Energy Systems is growing its business worldwide. One of SHARC’s recent projects is in Scotland\, where its wastewater heat exchange system works by intercepting wastewater from a town sewer line operated by Scottish Water. The technology pulls from the natural warmth contained within wastewater and transfers the heat via a heat exchanger. The recovered heat is then sent through heat pumps to generate the appropriate temperatures for use in the nearby college campus\, and supplies the majority of the college’s annual heating and hot water demand\, saving 150 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. The project recently won the Best Innovation Award at the Scottish Green Energy Awards. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Michael Albertson\, President & CEO at SHARC Energy \nMichael Albertson serves as President & CEO of SHARC Energy and is a renewable thermal energy expert with over 40 years of experience. SUMMARY:Evening Program - Mass Timber Construction – From Conception to Life Cycle Analysis
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nWith an increased focus on limiting environmental impact and reducing carbon emissions in our built environment\, architecture and construction professionals are increasingly exploring mass timber as a key strategy for creating greener\, healthier buildings. Mass timber can be used in place of steel or concrete to create structures that offer durable\, cost-effective performance with less embodied carbon. Still\, while mass timber offers environmental\, budgetary and aesthetic benefits\, the process for evaluating its application within specific projects can be complex. With mass timber’s growing popularity\, teams are learning how to navigate this complex decision-making given project parameters such as building typology\, height\, location\, budget\, timeline\, and sustainability goals. \nThis program aims to provide attendees with a deeper understanding of the environmental benefits and potential applications of mass timber as well as a road map for teams on how to evaluate the potential application of mass timber in your projects. Led by industry experts from WoodWorks\, HDR\, Clayco-Lamar Johnson Collaborative and Trivers\, the session will provide actionable insights for how to apply mass timber and realize its full potential in the built environment. Speakers will share key insights from real-word projects that will help attendees understand the best applications for mass timber and how best to make the case to clients considering cost-benefit analysis\, life cycle assessment and budget constraints. \nSpeakers: \n\nErika Winters-Downey\, Director\, Sustainable Structures at Clayco-Lamar Johnson Collaborative\nColin Rohlfing\, Vice President | Director of Sustainable Development at HDR\nRoss Welch\, Senior Project Architect | Associate at Trivers\n\nModerated by Jason Bahr\, Regional Director at WoodWorks \nADMISSIONFree – Members of Missouri Gateway Green Building Council and full time students. SUMMARY:Evening Program - Building Resilience: Collaborative Strategies for Flood Mitigation in Cahokia Heights & Brentwood
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nWe are excited to partner with the National Society of Black Engineers – Gateway Chapter for a discussion on regional flooding challenges\, including stormwater and flash flooding\, exploring how municipalities\, communities\, engineers and designers are addressing and preparing for local environmental impacts from climate change. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Between polar vortex winter storms paralyzing midwestern cities to four raging wildfires in Los Angeles wiping out entire neighborhoods\, we are immersed in cataclysmic weather events that are more intense\, frequent and damaging due to climate change. Like all intensifying weather and natural disaster events across the globe\, the specific threats depend on location and context – and magnify the impact of existing risks in a particular place based on climate\, topography\, historic and current development trends\, and more. \nHere in the St. Louis metro region\, our location along the Mississippi River and at the confluence of several large rivers places us at particular risk to flooding. Climate change promises to take advantage of existing vulnerabilities in the system and exacerbate impacts to our cities\, communities\, livelihoods and homes. In an effort to strengthen local resilience against such risks\, regional entities and organizations are coming together with local municipalities and communities to develop strategies to mitigate damage and protect communities\, while improving the resilience of the region as a whole. \nJoin us for a timely discussion on regional flooding challenges – including stormwater and flash flooding – exploring how municipalities\, communities\, engineers and designers are addressing and preparing for local environmental impacts from climate change. We’ll hear about regional planning and mitigation efforts\, then learn about two local communities – Cahokia Heights (IL) and Brentwood (MO) – examining the history of flooding and community impact\, and the mitigation strategies being pursued and implemented. \nSpeakers \n\nMatt Jones\, Project Manager\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\nNicole Nelson\, Equity Legal Services & Ms. Yvette Lyles\, Cahokia Heights resident\nEric Gruenenfelder\, Director of Parks & Recreation\, City of Brentwood & Elise Ibendahl\, Global Principal\, Flood Modeling and Planning\, Jacobs – Brentwood Bound\n\n  \nADMISSIONThis event is free to attend\, but please register! \nREGISTER NOW \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Speakers\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Matt Jones\, Project Manager\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – St. Louis District \nMatt Jones is a Project Manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, St. Louis District.
