SUMMARY:Data\, Data Everywhere: Maximizing Sustainability in Data Center Development\, Design & Operations - in partnership with ASHRAE STL and I2SL STL
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \nProgram Presented in partnership with: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n With the growth of cloud-based computing and the recent rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI)\, data centers are becoming the key critical infrastructure of our digital world. This exploding growth has propelled an unprecedented surge in data center development as entities race to secure the resources and infrastructure needed to meet current and future demand. While innovations like AI can leverage incredible computing power with amazing potential benefits\, they are also incredibly resource-intensive processes\, which means that the data centers built to support them have extensive needs for energy\, land and water to function optimally. \nIn the race to develop this critical infrastructure\, companies are having to grapple with the environmental impacts of its enormous energy and water needs\, as they reconcile the need to meet current demands while considering long-term costs\, sustainability goals and impacts on local communities. Fortunately\, innovations in computing technology\, building systems\, and renewable energy production for data centers have the potential to make this critical infrastructure more resource-efficient. \nThis program brings together experts from the field to discuss current practices and emerging trends in strategies for optimizing energy efficiency and reducing energy and water demand in data centers. Participants will learn about tools available to integrate sustainability principles into data center projects to achieve high-performance\, energy-efficient\, and environmentally responsible outcomes. Our presenters bring a wealth of experience and unique perspectives that will shed light on strategies throughout project development from site assessment to design of building systems to operations in response to a range of client needs. Join us to learn about the opportunities and challenges in making data center development\, design and operations more sustainable. \n \n \n \n \n \n Thanks to our sponsors!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SPEAKERS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n John Weale\, Principal\, Introba\nA mechanical engineer with 25 years of experience\, John is a specialist in critical facilities ranging from secure airport datacenters to industrial laboratories to teaching laboratories. His recent designs have included data center facilities ranging from 5MW to 90 MW; all-electric laboratory buildings\, which meet carbon-reduction goals of clients and offer a robust\, efficient\, and low-maintenance facility; and corporate campus systems for major technology clients. \nHe has been a lead designer or key technical advisor on some of the most highly sustainable projects\, including six LEED Platinum certified projects\, seven Net Zero projects\, and two Living Building Challenge feasibility projects. He believes the key to creating simple\, high-efficiency\, and low-cost systems is an integrated approach with close team coordination that makes building architecture\, lighting\, and mechanical systems work together as a single system. This approach is equally valid for minimizing cost and points of failure in a data center design as it is for achieving a net zero campus building. John has worked on projects in all key sectors\, including government\, technology office\, education\, and multi-family. He has been published in ASHRAE Journal and contributed to the Data Center Handbook: Plan\, Design\, Build\, and Operations of a Smart Data Center. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jeremy Nolen\, Director of Business Development – Renewables\, Farnsworth Group \nWith a background in renewable energy project development\, Jeremy has worked with clients for the last decade through funding/financing\, system design\, procurement\, construction\, commissioning\, and ongoing maintenance. SUMMARY:Evening Program - Simplifying Net Zero & Maximizing Climate Impacts from Buildings
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW! \nProgram Presented in partnership with: \n \nWe hear the terms Net Zero\, carbon neutral\, and decarbonization used a lot in the green building industry. The different terms and definitions can get confusing – and the actual impact of the strategies they describe can vary widely. So\, which is the right path to make sure our buildings are acting as climate solutions? Join us for our annual joint program with ASHRAE and I2SL to dive into the details with our guest speaker\, Josh Radoff. Last year\, Josh penned a five-part op-ed series for BuildingGreen\, starting with “Net Zero Has Failed. We need a Universal Carbon Standard.” We look forward to a lively presentation and discussion with Josh! \nSPEAKER: Josh Radoff is the Renewable and Sustainable Energy (RSE) Specialization lead within the Masters of the Environment (MENV) program at CU Boulder\, where he teaches classes on sustainability and decarbonization and serves on the campus sustainability executive committee. SUMMARY:Evening Program - A Practical Approach to Carbon Neutral Master Planning
DESCRIPTION:See list of August 15\, 2023 Attendees \nProgram Presented in partnership with: \n \nREGISTER NOW \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCampuses bring our communities together – providing education\, training\, and jobs for millions of people in the Midwest in cities\, small towns\, and rural communities. Central plants are the lifeblood of campuses\, whether they are focused on education\, research\, healthcare\, or manufacturing. While we know that a carbon neutral future is coming\, priorities are often set on maintaining operations\, planning for the future\, redundancy\, and resiliency\, which continue to take precedence over carbon reduction. Historically\, marginalized communities have been differentially impacted by poor environmental planning and at times by environmental catastrophes. Creating low or zero carbon central plants on our local campuses and in the buildings they serve is one of many steps toward environmental justice. It is our job as built environment professionals to be aware of the impact of our work and this is one area where we can do right both for our clients and the communities they serve. \nSPEAKER: Michael Swenson is a Senior Associate at BR+A Consulting Engineers. His work focuses on the energy planning\, including carbon neutral master planning\, vetting energy conservation measures in design\, commissioning of building systems in construction\, and post-occupancy measurement and verification. Prior to joining the firm\, Michael lead Green Building Services at Harvard University providing sustainable design consulting to the University and partnering with the Harvard Office for Sustainability to advise on sustainability policy\, healthier material standards\, and occupant engagement strategies. Michael has also worked as Faculty and a Teaching Fellow at Harvard Extension School where he taught classes covering a variety of topics including sustainable design and construction; buildings for health\, comfort\, and sustainability; and energy auditing. \nADMISSION\nFree – Members of Missouri Gateway Green Building Council\, ASHRAE – St. Louis and full-time students\n$25.00 – NON-Members\nASHRAE – St. Louis members should register for this event with ASHRAE to receive the member pricing.  \nREGISTER NOW \nTHANKS TO OUR EVENT SPONSORS \n\n  \nCONTINUING EDUCATION\nApproved for 1 AIA CES/LU \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nDescribe how to plan for a carbon neutral future without sacrificing operations\, redundancy\, or resiliency.\nIdentify ways to align with stakeholders and build consensus around carbon neutral goals.\nAnalyze how a hybrid approach to carbon neutral master planning can maximize benefits while leveraging previous investments.\nExamine how an implementation plan takes shape\, including right sizing systems for future loads\, and long term planning for carbon neutral operation with future load reduction.\n\nCONSENT TO USE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES\nThis event will be recorded and shared on our website.
