While many builders\, owners\, facilities managers\, and their service providers invest significant resources to achieve safe\, satisfactory air quality in spaces where people work\, sleep\, learn\, and play\, others may not prioritize or understand measures to improve indoor air. This can lead to disparities in the quality of indoor air among different geographies and demographics. Moreover\, most buildings’ indoor air quality (IAQ) remains invisible until a problem or complaint prompts a reactive assessment. Join us to learn how USGBC is working with its research and policy partners and communities of practice to expand indoor air quality performance verification and proactive resilience planning in buildings\, expanding on our work to promote and scale foundational IAQ strategies. \nLive attendance at this session is eligible for 1 GBCI CE Hour – General. \nREGISTER FOR THE APRIL 3 WEBINAR \n2026 Schedule \n\nMarch 6 | Sustainable AI Practice in the Built Environment: Sufficient\, Efficient\, and Scalable Impact\nApril 3 | Elevating indoor air quality with research\, innovation\, and collective action\nMay 1 | State of Play: U.S. Existing Buildings Market\nJune 5 | Sustainable Finance in the Built Environment\nJuly 10 | Innovation Reimagined: The LEED v5 Project Priorities Category\nAugust 7 | Sustainable Cities: Strategies for advancing city-wide sustainability goals\nSeptember 11 | Advancing Circularity with TRUE\nOctober 2 | The Tripod: Three USGBC Tools to Facilitate Decarbonization\nNovember 6 | Regenerative\, Resilient and Equitable Solutions for Large-scale Developments (Communities)\nDecember 4 | High performing existing buildings with LEED O+M

But how do we understand the ways in which social equity and quality of life is explored at these differing scales? \nThis session takes a closer look at sustainability and the development of LEED v5 rating systems through the lens of social impact. Hear perspectives from the U.S. Green Building Council\, the LEED Equity Working Group\, as well as industry practitioners in design\, development\, and planning to engage in a discussion around how equity represents itself within the scope of buildings and the larger urban fabric. \nBuilt environment professionals face the dual mission of meeting environmental standards while advancing social inclusivity and justice in the face of climate change. Panelists will review key components of equity embedded within LEED v5 and beyond as LEED for Cities and Communities continues to develop\, examining the significance and impact on project development. \nSpeakers will share practical guidance on the new LEED v5 Social Impact Assessment\, providing attendees with tools to drive inclusivity in their work\, and equipping participants with essential skills in community engagement and outreach\, vital for gaining local stakeholder support. Staying updated with evolving LEED standards is crucial for industry competitiveness\, appealing to socially responsible clients and investors. \nThis session is pivotal for architects\, planners\, policymakers\, and advocates\, empowering them to lead positive change by crafting buildings and spaces that are not only environmentally sustainable but also socially inclusive and equitable—a crucial step toward a more just and sustainable future. Gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in advancing equity in the built environment\, including potential barriers to implementation\, measurement methodologies\, and the need for ongoing advocacy and education. \nThis presentation was recorded at Greenbuild 2024\, which took place from November 12-15\, 2024 at the Philadelphia Convention Center. \nREGISTER FOR THE OCTOBER 3 WEBINAR \n\nFebruary 7 | Live | Green Careers\, Bright Futures: Strategies for Success in the Sustainability and Advanced Energy Workforce Pipeline\nMarch 7 | LEED v5 as a Tool for Decarbonizing the Built Environment\nApril 4 | Live  | Implementing LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance Worldwide\nMay 2 | New Launch for Real Estate Portfolios: Accelerating Action\, Performance\, and Verification\nJune 6 | Live | Green Finance Tools and Resources\nJuly 11 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\nAugust 1 | Live | LEEDv5 Updates and Discussion\nSeptember 5 | Digging into SITES\nOctober 3 | Live | TRUE Total Resource Management\nNovember 7 | Equity at Scale: Exploring LEED’s Role in Creating More Just Buildings and Communities\nDecember 5 | Live | Information Forthcoming\nJanuary 2026 | Getting Green for Green: Using Sustainable Finance Strategies for Green Building Investments

SUMMARY:First Friday Webinar - Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal
DESCRIPTION:USGBC will once again offer First Friday Webinars in 2025 – but this year with a twist! Reach out to your MO Gateway Green Building Council staff at info@mogreenbuildings.org. \nREGISTER FOR THE JULY 11 WEBINAR \nJuly 11 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\n \nThis session examines the enabling factors making zero carbon buildings possible\, how USGBC and our members are leading the way and making zero carbon buildings possible\, the current policy and market drivers\, and what future developments to watch for. \nEvery day\, more owners are committing to zero carbon emission goals\, and more buildings are achieving these conditions — for example\, there are well over 100 LEED Zero certified projects around the globe. Making zero emission buildings a reality has happened through steady and intentional efforts. USGBC\, members\, and government agencies have promoted and incentivized best practices for buildings –high levels of efficiency\, use of renewable energy\, and reducing harmful refrigerant leaks – which form the core of zero emission buildings. Building on this\, recent advances and rapid adoption of technologies such as heat pumps\, along with the lower cost of renewable energy and decarbonizing grids\, have become key factors in creating more zero emission buildings. \nThe National Definition for Zero Emission Building\, local ordinances\, and other policies are poised to further accelerate zero emission buildings. Market forces\, led by global policy and investor interests\, are influencing increased corporate commitments. Speakers will explain the interplay among these drivers\, and new tools like LEED v5\, in creating momentum and a broad transformation – and how early efforts are playing out. In light of the proliferation of “zero” and “aligned” terminology in the market\, speakers will untangle the key terms and components to aid understanding and accountability. \nAchieving zero emissions will take different approaches for existing buildings as compared to new\, as well as vary by region. Creating carbon reduction plans for buildings and portfolios is becoming critical. The session will highlight the role of governments and nonprofits in supporting quality plans with new resources such as the forthcoming USGBC-ASHRAE guide. \nThe session also highlights developments on the horizon for zero carbon buildings\, namely incorporation of embodied carbon measurement and reduction. Speakers will explain the state of play of efforts to align embodied carbon and whole life carbon approaches. \nREGISTER FOR THE JULY 11 WEBINAR \n\nFebruary 7 | Live | Green Careers\, Bright Futures: Strategies for Success in the Sustainability and Advanced Energy Workforce Pipeline\nMarch 7 | LEED v5 as a Tool for Decarbonizing the Built Environment\nApril 4 | Live  | Implementing LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance Worldwide\nMay 2 | New Launch for Real Estate Portfolios: Accelerating Action\, Performance\, and Verification\nJune 6 | Live | Green Finance Tools and Resources\nJuly 11 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\nAugust 1 | Live | LEEDv5 Updates and Discussion\nSeptember 5 | Digging into SITES\nOctober 3 | Live | TRUE Total Resource Management\nNovember 7 | Equity at Scale: Exploring LEED’s Role in Creating More Just Buildings and Communities\nDecember 5 | Live | Information Forthcoming\nJanuary 2026 | Getting Green for Green: Using Sustainable Finance Strategies for Green Building Investments

After six years of research and development\, SHARC Energy Systems has moved into commercialization of its patented SHARC™ and PIRANHA™ systems. With new offices in Glasgow\, Scotland\, and successful installations across North America\, the UK\, and Australia\, SHARC Energy Systems is growing its business worldwide. One of SHARC’s recent projects is in Scotland\, where its wastewater heat exchange system works by intercepting wastewater from a town sewer line operated by Scottish Water. The technology pulls from the natural warmth contained within wastewater and transfers the heat via a heat exchanger. The recovered heat is then sent through heat pumps to generate the appropriate temperatures for use in the nearby college campus\, and supplies the majority of the college’s annual heating and hot water demand\, saving 150 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. The project recently won the Best Innovation Award at the Scottish Green Energy Awards. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Michael Albertson\, President & CEO at SHARC Energy \nMichael Albertson serves as President & CEO of SHARC Energy and is a renewable thermal energy expert with over 40 years of experience. This session will describe how LEED’s newest rating system was redesigned to provide users with a framework for decarbonizing the built environment and to put buildings on a 1.5 degree Celsius pathway. \nBuilding design\, construction\, and operations have a dominant impact on global carbon emissions because of the scale of the building sector and its range of emission sources. Direct impacts include emissions from energy used in buildings\, refrigerant emissions\, and emissions from the creation of products used in buildings. And indirect impacts include the emissions from transportation going to and from buildings. \nAs a multi-attribute certification\, LEED is uniquely well-positioned to address all the emissions impacted by building design and operations. LEED v5 has been crafted to be as effective as possible at reducing carbon emissions from all sources and to provide buildings with an intuitive recipe for achieving those reductions. \nJoin key technical contributors to LEED v5 as they provide an overview of the LEED Building Design and Construction rating system\, an introduction to the LEED v5 impact areas\, and how LEED v5 was redesigned to deliver ultra-low carbon buildings. \nREGISTER FOR THE MARCH WEBINAR \n2025 Schedule \n\nFebruary 7 | Live | Green Careers\, Bright Futures: Strategies for Success in the Sustainability and Advanced Energy Workforce Pipeline\nMarch 7 | LEED v5 as a Tool for Decarbonizing the Built Environment\nApril 4 | Live  | Digging into SITES \nMay 2 | New Launch for Real Estate Portfolios: Accelerating Action\, Performance\, and Verification\nJune 6 | Live | Green Finance Tools and Resources\nJuly 11 | Implementing LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance Worldwide \nAugust 1 | Live | LEEDv5 Updates and Discussion\nSeptember 5 | Making Zero Emissions Buildings the New Normal\nOctober 3 | Live | TRUE Total Resource Management\nNovember 7 | Equity at Scale: Exploring LEED’s Role in Creating More Just Buildings and Communities\nDecember 5 | Live | Information Forthcoming\nJanuary 2026 | Getting Green for Green: Using Sustainable Finance Strategies for Green Building Investments

And how will this impact human health and wellbeing? It’s critical to note that LEED v5 recognizes that climate change will be the largest threat to human health. As such\, LEED v5\, particularly the indoor environmental quality category\, supports adaptation for current and future climate through the use of future weather files and the careful identification of vulnerable populations. LEED v5 prioritizes air quality transparency along with improved air quality monitoring strategies for both indoor and outdoor air. Once LEED projects consider and adapt to pressing physiological health threats\, they can also prioritize designing for mental health and wellness. By incorporating more universal and inclusive design principles\, LEED will empower projects to design for physically and mentally diverse populations. This not only means improving access to spaces and amenities throughout the building\, but also approaching existing strategies\, like acoustic design\, thermal comfort\, and lighting through a new lens. \nLEED v5 is deeply focused on identifying and alleviating the actual\, most critical threats to occupant physical health. That said\, the next version of LEED considers mental health and wellness more in-depth than ever before. Through new strategies\, like biophilic and universal design\, and improvements to existing strategies\, like daylight\, quality views and thermal comfort\, mental health and wellbeing will be at the forefront of LEED going forward and this session will demonstrate how. \nREGISTER FOR THE JANUARY WEBINAR \n\nFebruary: Overview of LEED v5: Taking action on climate\, quality of life\, and ecology\nMarch: LEED v5: Swift Climate Action\, Enriched Quality of Life\, and Advanced Land Use and Biodiversity\nApril: Navigating Smart Building Certifications for Sustainable Futures\nMay: LEED and Upfront Carbon Emissions: A Comprehensive Look at A1-A5 Embodied Carbon in Building Construction\nJune: LEED EBOM Plays Nice with WELL Health-Safety at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland\nJuly: Smart Building Charrette\, circa 2030: Realizing the Promise of High-Performance Green Buildings\nAugust: Exceeding ESG Commitments with LEED for Communities\nSeptember: Looking to the Future: Utilizing LEED as a Tool for Adaptive Reuse Projects\nOctober: LEED Zero Project Profiles\nNovember: Implementing the Future of LEED with LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance\nDecember: Beneficial Electrification in Northern Climates\nJanuary 2025: Inclusive Pathways to Health in LEED v5: Harnessing Biophilic and Universal Design

Originally constructed in 1866\, CMC earned LEED Platinum certification under LEED v4.1 EB+OM in 2019. With the support of pro-bono work by their LEED consultants\, Emerald Built Environments\, CMC started their pursuit of the WELL Health-Safety certification in 2020 during the pandemic. CMC was able to utilize much of the work completed through the LEED Platinum EB+OM efforts to ultimately earn WELL Health-Safety certification as well. \nThis presentation will delve into consistencies between EB+OM-approved green cleaning products and WELL Health-Safety product requirements and how CMC was able to build upon policies and procedures implemented in the LEED EB+OM process when pursuing WELL Health-Safety cleaning and sanitation features\, such as Support Handwashing and Selected Preferred Cleaning Products. In pursuing WELL Health Safety Air and Water Quality features\, the museum and LEED project engineer were also able to utilize ventilation and air treatment assessments previously performed during the EB+OM certification to inform the WELL Health-Safety Assessments. The museum’s commitment to clean air and water quality\, kicked off by its LEED certification\, made the WELL ‘Monitor Air and Water’ feature a no-brainer. CMC’s process of drafting WELL Health-Safety policies captured many of the procedures and practices already being implemented. \nThe presentation will close by looking towards CMC’s recertification\, to take place three years out from initial certification under LEED EB+OM. The presenters will share how Arc is being utilized to gauge the progress and ability of the museum to maintain its operational efficiencies. \nREGISTER FOR THE JUNE 7 WEBINAR \n  \n\nFebruary: Overview of LEED v5: Taking action on climate\, quality of life\, and ecology\nMarch: LEED v5: Swift Climate Action\, Enriched Quality of Life\, and Advanced Land Use and Biodiversity\nApril: Navigating Smart Building Certifications for Sustainable Futures\nMay: LEED and Upfront Carbon Emissions: A Comprehensive Look at A1-A5 Embodied Carbon in Building Construction\nJune: LEED EBOM Plays Nice with WELL Health-Safety at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland\nJuly: Smart Building Charrette\, circa 2030: Realizing the Promise of High-Performance Green Buildings\nAugust: Exceeding ESG Commitments with LEED for Communities\nSeptember: Looking to the Future: Utilizing LEED as a Tool for Adaptive Reuse Projects\nOctober: LEED Zero Project Profiles\nNovember: Implementing the Future of LEED with LEED v5 Operations + Maintenance\nDecember: Beneficial Electrification in Northern Climates\nJanuary 2025: Inclusive Pathways to Health in LEED v5: Harnessing Biophilic and Universal Design
